The Thrill of the Minnesota State Fair, Falcon Heights, 1900s

Under the old domed Main Building, the Minnesota State Fair sold a bold idea: progress you could walk into.

The Fair as Minnesota’s Sales Pitch

The Minnesota State Fair has always been a pitch.

Not just for the newest gadget or the biggest pumpkin, but for the state itself. This historic image of the fair’s Main Building — a domed centerpiece with flags overhead — shows Minnesota presenting confidence in timber, paint and symmetry. The message is plain: come in, look around, and see what we can do.

Even without a caption, the scene gives away its age. The road is dirt. The people out front look small against the building’s long wings and formal entrance. There’s none of today’s noise and signage, no Skyride overhead, no maze of parked cars. It’s quieter, but it’s still a show.
