What the interurban was — and why it showed up in towns like Romeo

Interurbans were electric railways that ran farther than city streetcars. They were built to move people quickly between Detroit and outlying towns, often on dedicated right-of-way, but sometimes right down main streets.

A key operator in southeast Michigan was the Detroit United Railway, created through the consolidation of smaller lines in the early 1900s.

Romeo’s interurban window: connected, then cut off

Local histories commonly describe interurban service through Romeo during the 1898–1934 era, with the line running through town streets as part of daily life.

The nearby interurban line pushed north from Rochester is also well documented: service began in 1899 under an early company name and later became part of the DUR system.

When the interurban era ended—through abandonment and system contraction in the 1920s–1930s—Romeo lost a form of public transportation that had been routine.

Daily life: mobility without owning a car

For residents, the interurban changed what “going to town” meant.

It made these trips easier and more frequent:

• Work trips toward Detroit and other job centers, without needing a personal vehicle.

• Shopping runs with predictable departure times and returns the same day.

• Family and social travel that no longer required an overnight stay or a full day of road travel.

Counterintuitive insight: for a window in the early 1900s, a Romeo resident could have had more practical public travel options than a resident decades later, after interurbans vanished and car dependence became the default.

The local economy: foot traffic, cash flow, and real estate

Interurban service helped small-town commerce in ways that show up indirectly in old downtown photos: more pedestrians, more shoppers arriving in groups, and more “quick trip” spending.

Economic effects likely included:

• Downtown spending: passengers arriving near business blocks bought meals, groceries, hardware, and services while waiting for the next car. (This pattern is described in interurban-era summaries that emphasize frequent runs and quick access to larger markets.)

• Market access for farm communities: interurbans helped connect rural producers with market activity, including trips timed to sell or buy supplies.

Why it ended, and what replaced it

By the 1920s, interurbans faced rising competition from paved roads, buses, and private cars. Histories of the DUR system describe widespread selloffs and abandonments through the 1920s into 1934.

For Romeo, that meant a shift: travel became more private, more flexible, and often more expensive—especially for residents who could not afford a car.

Roscommon, Michigan, 1895. A small wooden train station sits among tall pines, but the platform is crowded. What drew so much activity to this frontier village? Lumberjacks with sawed pine and hunters with their deer answered the question. In December 1879 alone, Roscommon shipped 317 deer by train. The rails had come through in 1873, and suddenly, this clearing by the Au Sable River was on Michigan’s map.

History of Roscommon Michigan: Early Growth

Roscommon was first settled in 1845 and became the county seat in 1875. It was named after County Roscommon in Ireland. Logging boomed as pine forests fell. By 1900, the town had a post office, two general stores, and a hotel. A 1908 Sanborn map shows shops and a big wooden school near the rail spur.

Surprising fact: hunters once treated Roscommon like a market town, shipping venison along with lumber. This chapter of history is evident in the photo above: deer and logs on the same platforms.

Main Street & Resorts

By the 1920s, Roscommon’s Main Street looked modern. A new drugstore and garage stood beside the tracks (see photo of Main St.), and Model-T cars replaced horses.

The Roscommon Northern Hotel (1910s photo) opened on Lake Street to host travelers and lumber buyers. But by the 1930s, Roscommon’s economy shifted to lakeside tourism and recreation. On Round Lake, the Whispering Pines Rendezvous resort (pictured below) welcomed vacationers.

Cottages and inns multiplied on Houghton and Higgins Lakes nearby. Families rented boats and danced at Roscommon’s lodges.

Even the Odd Fellows hall hosted summer socials. Roscommon was rebranding from a logging hub to a holiday stop, a shift common in Upper Michigan by the mid-20th century.

Industry: Oil, Gravel & Power

Other changes came quietly. In the late 1930s, a small oil well was drilled east of town (see oil-rig photo below). Although Michigan never rivaled Texas, this “wildcat” drilling made headlines locally.

Sand and gravel also became important – the Campbell pit on US-127 (1950s photo) dug material for roads. And Roscommon even built its own power plant.

Inside the powerhouse (1930s photo), turbines hummed to light streetlamps after dark. This mix of industries – timber, tourism, oil, and electricity – kept Roscommon alive when the forests were gone.

Legacy Today

Roscommon’s history is still on display. The old railroad depot has been moved to the Pioneer House museum. Nearby, the Roscommon Red Pines Natural Area preserves a 200-year-old pine stand – a reminder of the vast forests that once stood here. The village population is under 1,000 now, but summer festivals and historic buildings (like the old county office on Lake St.) connect people to the past. Roscommon’s story – from loggers shipping deer by train to visitors fishing on Round Lake – is quietly recorded in its photos and landmarks.

The story of Prudenville, Michigan, shows how hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation became the economic backbone of many small towns across northern Michigan — and why that model still holds today.

When the Lumber Was Gone, What Was Left?

Like much of Roscommon County, Prudenville began in the lumber era. Timber crews cut white pine and hardwood forests in the late 1800s. Sawmills operated. Camps thrived.

Then the trees thinned.

Across northern Michigan, that moment was decisive. Some towns faded into memory. Others adjusted. Prudenville made a hard pivot — from extraction to recreation.

Instead of shipping lumber out, it invited visitors in.

The Lake Became the Industry

Houghton Lake is Michigan’s largest inland lake. By the 1920s and 1930s, it was already drawing anglers from Detroit, Lansing, and Saginaw.

Fishing was not a hobbyist’s pastime. It was commerce.

Bait shops lined the road. Rowboats waited at wooden docks. Businesses like McKee’s Boats and Baits did steady trade. Pike and perch filled coolers — and cash registers.

Every fish pulled from the water supported something on Main Street: groceries, hardware, gas pumps, soda fountains.

Outdoor recreation became infrastructure.

Cabins, Not Hotels

Prudenville did not build grand resorts. It built cabins.

Rows of small cottages appeared beneath the pines. They were practical and affordable. Families drove north, unpacked for a week, fished at dawn, and cooked at dusk.

Cabin courts allowed the town to expand seasonally without becoming urban. Summers brought crowds. Winters brought quiet. That rhythm defined the economy.

In the 1930s, Prudenville could generate more concentrated business activity in July than some agricultural towns saw all year. The summer surge was intense.

And it was predictable.

Deer Season Was an Economic Event

Johnson’s Rustic Dance Palace stood in the woods near Houghton Lake. On summer nights, music carried through open doors. Tourists and locals met there. Courtships began. Stories were shared.

The dance hall, the bait shop, the church pew during deer season — these places tied recreation to community identity.

That blending of visitor and resident is often overlooked. Prudenville was not simply a resort. It was a working town whose work happened to revolve around leisure.

The North’s Economic Blueprint

Prudenville’s model became common across the Upper Great Lakes.

When timber declined, northern communities leaned on what remained: water, woods, wildlife. Outdoor recreation replaced heavy industry as the primary draw.

Transportation reinforced that shift. Automobiles poured north by the 1930s. Greyhound buses stopped in town. Access kept the dollars flowing.

And that pattern persists.

Today, debates over tourism pressure, conservation policy, and development fill public meetings. Yet the foundation remains clear. Boat launches, marinas, deer camps, snowmobile trails — these are not side attractions. They are economic pillars.

Without hunting and fishing, towns like Prudenville would look very different.

A Small Town Built on Big Water

Prudenville never became a city. It did not need to.

Upstairs rooms offered a place to stay in a growing town that rarely slowed down.

City Hall reflected Cadillac’s civic ambitions. Built of stone with arched windows and strong lines, it projected authority and permanence. Local government handled permits, public works, and law enforcement from this building as the city expanded. The structure itself sent a message that Cadillac expected to last.

From Winona to the Wolverine State

The J.R. Watkins Medical Co., founded in 1868 in Winona, Minnesota, became one of the most recognized names in patent medicines and household products in the Upper Midwest. By the turn of the 20th century, the company had built a wide network of independent sales agents. Michigan, with its mix of small towns, lumber camps and isolated farms, was prime territory.

When Roads Were Suggestions

The wagon in this image is fitted with runners instead of wheels, a practical adjustment for Michigan winters. Dirt roads could turn impassable with snow and ice. Rail lines connected major cities such as Detroit and Grand Rapids, but beyond those hubs, commerce often depended on horsepower. For many rural families, a trip to town was not a quick errand. It could take hours.

Medicine, Marketing and Monthly Tabs

Watkins agents were more than delivery drivers. They were marketers, credit managers and community regulars. Many extended small lines of credit to farm families, collecting payment after harvest. In return, they offered products that promised relief from common ailments. Liniments claimed to soothe sore muscles. Extracts and spices improved home cooking at a time when variety was limited and store shelves were sparse outside larger cities.

The Patent Medicine Era — With a Disclaimer

It is important to place this era in context. The early 1900s marked the height of patent medicine sales in the United States. Oversight was limited until the federal Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. Companies could make broad claims about effectiveness, and not all remedies lived up to their advertising. While Watkins survived well beyond the patent medicine boom and expanded into food products, the period was shaped by both innovation and aggressive marketing.

More Than a Sales Call

Still, for rural Michigan residents, the arrival of a Watkins wagon was practical and social. News traveled slowly. A salesman might bring catalogs, updates from neighboring towns or word of shifting crop prices. In communities stretching from Lansing north to the Upper Peninsula, such visits broke the routine of winter isolation.

Suitcase in Hand, Miles to Go

The man in this photograph stands formally dressed, suitcase in hand. The case likely held order forms, receipts and product samples. His posture suggests professionalism and patience. Selling door-to-door required persistence, especially in Michigan’s cold months. Snow-packed roads and freezing winds were part of the job.

The End of the Horse Era

This image captures a turning point between older and newer economies. Within a few decades, automobiles would replace horses on many of these routes. Improved roads and centralized retail stores would reduce the need for traveling wagons. National brands would move from face-to-face sales to storefront shelves and printed advertisements.

A Knock That Meant Connection

Yet companies like Watkins built loyalty that lasted generations. In many Michigan households, small brown bottles of extract and tins of salve became familiar fixtures. The brand endured because it adapted to changing times while keeping a foothold in the communities that first sustained it.

Today, this photograph offers more than nostalgia. It shows how goods once moved through Michigan: slowly, locally and through personal relationships. Before chain pharmacies and online checkout carts, commerce depended on cold mornings, steady horses and a knock at the door.

That knock carried more than a sales pitch. It carried connection in a state defined as much by its distances as by its towns.

The morning began with sound. A train whistle carried across town as the Wabash line pulled into the depot. Mail sacks came off first. Newspapers followed. Freight after that. By midmorning, the mill down by the river was busy. Grain arrived by wagon and left as flour or feed. The river powered the work, steady and mechanical. When the White mill ran, the town moved faster. When it paused, everything slowed. This rhythm shaped the day more than any clock on the wall.

At the same time, school was in session. Children filled classrooms, learning reading, arithmetic, and order. Few would go on to higher education, but that was not the goal. The goal was preparation—how to keep accounts, read contracts, and function in a world that expected reliability. Teachers lived nearby. The school bell marked time as clearly as the train whistle.

By afternoon, activity shifted again. The bank saw deposits and payments. Money moved carefully. Brick walls and ledgers signaled confidence. Belleville was not guessing about its future. It was planned for in small, cautious steps.

Here is the part that often surprises modern readers: life in Belleville in 1910 was busy. Structured. Demanding. Many residents today live farther from daily schedules than their counterparts did more than a century ago.

The ordinary weekday mattered because it repeated. One day looked much like the next. That consistency built trust, habits, and stability. When change came later—when the river was dammed and Belleville Lake reshaped the area—the town absorbed it because the foundation was already there.

History is often told through turning points. Belleville’s story is better understood through repetition. The town was built not by dramatic moments, but by ordinary days that worked.

The History of Isle Royale, Michigan, is often told as a wilderness story. That is only half true. From the 1830s through 1940, Isle Royale was shaped by work and movement: copper prospects, commercial fishing, navigation lights, and a summer lodging economy built around docks and protected harbors.

What made the island different was not size alone. It was a distance. On Isle Royale, the shoreline was the road. If you wanted supplies, you needed a ship. If you wanted visitors, you needed a dock. If you wanted ships to arrive safely, you needed lights.

1842–1859: Copper pressure and a need for safe harbors

After the 1842 Treaty of La Pointe opened the region to mineral entry, Isle Royale drew outside interest in copper. The National Park Service reports that by 1847, more than a dozen mining companies had established sites on the island.

Not every claim succeeded. But even short-lived mining created supply traffic and shoreline infrastructure. Ships brought people, food, equipment, and mail. In rough water, a harbor could mean profit—or survival.

Fun Fact About Isle Royale

Isle Royale and the Keweenaw Peninsula share the same copper-bearing rift geology. The National Park Service calls it a “distinctive copper-rich geology,” and USGS mapping shows the same major rock units tied to native copper in the region. But modern park geology summaries note a key difference: unlike the Keweenaw’s famous lodes, Isle Royale does not have abundant copper deposits or large lode bodies. A Lifeline on Lake Superior’s Edge

In its earliest decades, the store sold food, tools, clothing, and mining supplies to residents who had few alternatives. Eagle Harbor was remote even by Upper Peninsula standards. Storms on Lake Superior could isolate the town for days. When ships did arrive, news, mail, and goods flowed through the store’s front door.

By the 1920s, the building had already earned a familiar look. Wooden steps worn smooth by boots led into a crowded interior. The store functioned as a post office and informal meeting place. After the Boom Went Quiet

The second image, taken around 1950, captures a different moment. The copper boom had ended decades earlier. Many mines were closed, and Eagle Harbor had grown quieter. The store, now painted white, reflects that shift. It remained essential, but no longer frantic. Cars replaced wagons. Fewer people gathered on the steps, but the building kept its role as the town’s anchor.

A Store That Kept Adapting

What makes the Eagle Harbor General Store unusual is its longevity. It continued operating long after many Copper Country businesses disappeared. Over time, it sold everything from groceries and hardware to everyday household goods. In later years, beer was bottled in the basement, a reminder that the store adapted as tastes and needs changed.

The Doors Finally Close

The store remained open until 2004, ending a commercial run of more than 140 years. That closing marked more than the loss of a business. It marked the end of a way of life built around a single place where nearly everyone passed through at some point.

From Store to Museum

In 2010, artists Liz Ward and Robert Ziebell purchased the building. Rather than strip it of its past, they preserved it. Today, the Eagle Harbor General Store operates as a museum, while also serving as a home and studio. Visitors can still see the counters, shelving, and layout that once supported an entire community.

Still Standing in Eagle Harbor

The two photographs, taken decades apart, tell a quiet story. Paint colors change. Traffic slows. Industries rise and fall. But the building remains. In a region defined by boom and bust, the Eagle Harbor General Store simply stayed long enough to become the oldest original store in the Copper Country, and a rare witness to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula history.

A Transportation Problem on Lake Superior

In the early 1930s, reaching Isle Royale depended on Lake Superior’s mood. Steamers and small boats ran when conditions allowed. Schedules were loose. Delays were common. There was no fast, reliable way to reach the island.

That changed briefly in 1932, when aviation entered the picture.

The Man Behind the Route

That year, pilot D. W. Wescoat purchased a 1928 Sikorsky S-38 flying boat, registered NC199H, and launched the Royale Line. His goal was straightforward: ferry tourists to Isle Royale by air, when the island was not yet a national park.

Wescoat was not running a large airline. This was a one-plane operation, seasonal and weather-dependent, typical of early Great Lakes aviation.

Why the Sikorsky S-38 Worked

The Sikorsky S-38 was designed for routes like this. Its boat-shaped hull and twin radial engines allowed it to land directly on open water. With few prepared runways near Isle Royale, water landings were the only practical option.

Wescoat’s aircraft regularly landed at Rock Harbor, cutting travel time from days to hours when conditions cooperated.

A Short-Lived but Important Chapter

The Royale Line did not last long, and Wescoat never became a national aviation figure. Records of his later life are limited. What survives is proof that Isle Royale could be reached by air years before formal ferry systems and park infrastructure were in place.

Those early flights helped reshape how people thought about access to the island. When Isle Royale later became Isle Royale National Park in 1940, the idea of regular transportation—by boat or plane—was already established.

For one summer, Lake Superior was crossed not just by hulls, but by wings.

What changed was not the town’s location, but its purpose.

From Copper Shipping Point to Working Harbor

Copper Harbor began as a practical place. Copper ore moved through its docks. Fishing boats worked the shoreline. When large-scale mining declined, the town did not collapse. It adjusted.

Fishing remained steady. The harbor stayed active. Families continued to work the water even as fewer ships carried ore. The images show nets spread out to dry along the shore—evidence of a working town, not a museum piece.

This was not a reinvention. It was continuity.

When Tourists Arrived, Work Did Not Leave

As mining faded, visitors arrived. Steamships brought summer travelers. Later, automobiles followed rough roads north. Resorts appeared, but they did not overwhelm the town.

Hotels and cabins rose close to the harbor, not away from it. Visitors slept uphill while fishermen worked below. Tourism and labor shared the same space.

That balance mattered. Copper Harbor did not become a resort town in name only. It remained useful.

Iron Country and Uncertain Ground

The Marquette Iron Range had already proven its value. By the 1850s, iron from the Upper Peninsula was feeding blast furnaces across the Great Lakes. Railroads followed ore, and towns followed railroads.

But not every location made the cut.

Michigamie Falls appears to have been a speculative settlement—close enough to water power and rumored deposits to justify attention, but too far from proven ore bodies to attract sustained investment. In iron country, rumors could carry a town only so far.

Built Fast, Meant to Be Temporary

Photographs from the 1910s show log homes built quickly and cheaply. These were not houses designed for generations. They were structures meant to serve a purpose and, if necessary, be abandoned.

One striking detail in the images is an automobile parked along the dirt road. Cars were still uncommon in the Upper Peninsula at the time. Its presence suggests a visiting official, a promoter, or a family with enough means to leave quickly if the gamble failed. The road itself barely qualifies as infrastructure.

A Town Without Anchors

Unlike mining centers such as Ishpeming or Negaunee, Michigamie Falls never gained a post office or a formal municipal structure. That absence matters.

In Michigan history, post offices marked permanence. Without one, a settlement remained provisional. When surveys failed to confirm the presence of profitable ore, investors moved on. Workers followed. Families left soon after. There was little reason to dismantle what had been built.

Abandonment by Design

Nature handled what people did not. Roofs sagged. Paths disappeared. Brush reclaimed the road. Only the river remained reliable.

Michigamie Falls should not be understood as a dramatic ghost town with legends or folklore. It is better read as a case study—evidence of how thin the margin was between success and failure in the Upper Peninsula’s mining economy.

Fire, Timber, and a Railroad Town

Alba, Michigan did not ease into existence.

It arrived quickly, built by timber, pulled forward by railroad tracks, and shaped by forces far larger than the town itself. Like many northern Michigan communities, Alba’s early years were intense, productive, and fragile.

Its story is not about spectacle. It is about work, loss, rebuilding, and staying put when the boom years ended.

Before Alba Had a Name

Long before a town stood here, the land around present-day Alba lay within the seasonal homelands of the Odawa (Ottawa) and Ojibwe (Chippewa) peoples.

These Anishinaabe nations traveled through the region for hunting, fishing, and trade. Rivers, forests, and portage routes mattered more than fixed boundaries. While no permanent Indigenous village has been documented at the exact site of Alba, the area was well known and regularly used long before treaties opened the land to settlement.

That history faded from view as railroads pushed north.

Kalkaska - A Town on Fire

The history of Kalkaska, Michigan includes sawmills, railroads, and one of the most destructive fires ever recorded in a small northern Michigan town. On July 5, 1908, a blaze tore through the village’s downtown, leveling 14 major buildings and forcing a quick decision: rebuild, or let the town fade.

Strong west winds pushed the flames from building to building. The fire consumed the Kalkaska City Bank, Glazier’s dry goods store, Colson’s drugstore, Stover’s pharmacy, and the two-story Opera House block. The town’s fire brigade did what it could, but they were quickly outmatched. Water pressure failed. Sparks leapt onto nearby barns and houses. Dozens of spot fires erupted across town.

By evening, most of the business district was gone.

Losses Mount

Estimates put the damage between $150,000 and $250,000. Merchants saved what they could—safes, typewriters, and furniture were dragged into the streets. One man nearly died trying to put out a roof fire on his house. But despite the losses, there was no pause.

A Fast Rebuild

The story of the 1908 fire isn’t just about destruction. It’s about what happened next. Kalkaska’s business owners didn’t wait. Within 24 hours, insurance agents were in town. By the end of the week, blueprints for new buildings were being drawn up.

Temporary shops were set up in barns and spare rooms. Newspaper presses resumed. Bricklayers were on site by mid-July.

What Survived

Some stock was salvaged. The town’s musical instruments from the band hall were carried out just before the building collapsed. Business ledgers were saved. Photographers like E.L. Beebe captured the damage and sold postcards—helping document the event while also earning money for families affected by the fire.
